UTI in Children

Child <3 mths: urgently admit.

Child ≥ 3 mths: use positive nitrite to guide. Start antibiotics: also send pre-treatment MSU.

Refer for investigation if child <6 months, or recurrent or atypical UTI.

Lower UTI:

trimethoprim 

or nitrofurantoin 

 

 

*Cefalexin suspension is a more cost-effective alternative than nitrofurantoin suspension for children under 12 years and those unable to take tablets.

3 days

Upper UTI:

co-amoxiclav 

Second line: cefixime

7-10  days
